his weekend we lost some friends.

The news came in the form of a phone call from one of the parties involved. It was a sad goodbye, letting us know that our couples/family friendship, which we both enjoyed, was no longer. Their marriage was over. The culprit, of course, was sex.

I won’t pretend to empathize with either party. The pain they both must be going through is beyond my frame of reference.

I’ve determined that every Best Actor and Actress has something in common. They pick roles that will shock people. They pick roles that are challenging. They pick roles that will make people love them because, deep down, they hate themselves so much. The least we can do is award them with some kind of trophy for all their hard work on top of their enormous salaries.

Dear Facebook,

It's not you, it's me. I need to figure things out. Like how you are sucking all my time and how you're making me into someone I am not. Like how you make me hate myself as I skim through posts and pictures of my so-called "friends". God, their lives are so perfect! Why is my life not as perfect as theirs?

Like, Shopping and Stuff

Reblogged from leave me alone i'm trying to Kill myself:

You know when people ask the question: What do you like to do? I would never dare say. "Umm... you know, like, shopping and stuff ", but it's the truth.

I've found that I take this opportunity to impress the listener with how multifaceted and intelligent I am. Leaving out activities that may seem shallow or gluttonous I construct a version of myself that's incomplete.

A “Life is Good” Kind of day…

Today I experienced an all-time high while attending my oldest daughter’s graduation from California Western School of Law… the tears ran down my cheeks as I tried to hold onto my composure sharing this experience with her. As I sat there watching her every move I wondered what I have done in my life to deserve her; to deserve this opportunity to witness her experiencing the high reaching this major accomplishment in her life…always questioning is my nature, sometimes to the point of wearing myself completely out… The pride I felt being her Mom cannot be expressed in words.

Suburban Worries

Reblogged from :

I admit it.  I used to judge people that lived in the suburbs.  Who wouldn’t?  I was a twenty something living in Chicago.  I had no kids, no car and no utilities coupled with cheap rent and a resilient liver.  My biggest worry was catching the next train or if my music was too loud.  I could walk out the front door of my apartment building to endless opportunities for entertainment, food and friends.

An early flight and a million subways later Sam and I were in Paris. The jet lag and consent going finally got me down. I couldn't help but want only sleep. I kept telling myself, "You're in the most beautiful place in world, you can sleep later!"

First stop was Notre Damie

I was fascinated by how many people were in Paris.

“Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.”

― Henry James

Writing is a concentrated form of thinking…a young writer sees that with words he can place himself more clearly into the world. Words on a page, that’s all it takes to help him separate himself from the forces around him, streets and people and pressures and feelings. He learns to think about these things, to ride his own sentences into new perceptions.”

Don Delillo

“There is only one page left to write on. I will fill it with words of only one syllable. I love. I have loved. I will love.”

― Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Traveler’s Wife

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

― Dr. Seuss

“Under the seams runs the pain.”

― Anne Carson, Autobiography of Red

As is the same with any other art form poetry does require some level of natural writing talent and ability. However, no matter how much talent one may have, without the tools of the trade, it can be hard to realize your full potential.

Here is a brief list of items any poet should have in is or her "tool kit."
